More than half of Gen Z and millennial media consumers prefer subtitles, according to new survey results from YPulse. No surprise there. So when I heard about Travis Scott’s new song with Gloria Hallelujah Woods aka GloRilla, I pulled up the lyrics and listened to the song for all it had to offer.

Now, as a Caribbean girlie, I immediately was drawn to the throwback nod to the music of Shyne feat. Barrington Levy's "Bad Boyz”. The 90’s/00’s Hip Hop was a time. But with further examination of her lyrics I was immediately turned off. Complete eye roll. And to be honest, I could care less about Travis’ lyrics because he’s shown he doesnt care about even the physical safety of his fans. I don’t hold him to a standard because there isn’t one. Let’s move on the lyrics:

He nutted, I swallowed them kids so fast, had to fuck around, put out an Amber Alert

It's 5 a.m., bitch, I'm up in the gym, but a lazy-ass ho would discredit my work (The fuck?)

Word on the street I'm the bitch with the heat, you wouldn't even believe what I charge for a verse (Woah)

Workin' hard, I'm grindin' (Hey), diamonds hittin', I'm shinin' (Hoo)

Gangster bitch for real, these hoes be on these beats just rhymin' (Weak ass)

All my, all my opps be dyin' (Yup), all my friends be lyin' (For sure)

Havin' flashbacks when I was just ridin' that dick, damn near had forgot I was drivin' (Damn)

When I think of music, rap specifically, from women MCs I’m concerned about the messaging that’s being spewed. I’m all for a pleasure centered good time, but do we have to make it public and put it on a track for the world to hear? What you and your man do is your business. GloRilla got the ear of the younger generation of girls, young men with girlfriends, and men. How does this set up women to show up? Men? How do these lyrics uplift women? This couldn’t be women’s empowerment, “swallowing them kids”. An amber alert? That’s a serious matter. Also important to note that America’s Black children are missing at higher and more disproportionate rates than their white counterparts. Black children are given less media coverage. Do we, as listeners, need to hear what’s being done in your bedroom? Is sex and screwing all we’ve got to offer as women? And I know those Hoteps are gonna be mad she mentioned Matthew! She contradicts herself with her boundary about, “Don’t ask me ‘bout no ho I used to fuck with, I ain’t got nothin’ to say”. The song was the invitation into your business. Clock that tea.

When I think about music, I know its a high calling. Musicians have the ears, minds, and influence of people. Music it emotes feelings. And the musicians are those truth tellers. Sinners reminded us of that. And I know with a powerful name like Gloria HALLELUJAH Woods, she can do better.

I wish she would mention these politicians being all up in our uteruses! Or the elimination of Medicaid. Some may say this isn’t sexy. That won’t sell. Well, I’m here more for GloRilla’s A&R team. GloRilla is from Memphis, Tennessee a state where 1.5 million Tennesseans are on TennCare and operates with an annual budget of approximately $18.6 billion. Those numbers matter. Perhaps, there are more pressing matters to speak on. Let’s shine a light on that.
